This woman’s name should honestly be changed to Courage.
In the face of some of the greatest adversity I have ever seen, Baby rises and forges ahead. Coming from a very poor family whose father is in constant poor health and mother who suffered a stroke, Baby carries the weight in her family. Two years ago her twin brother was killed when burned badly in an accident and her younger sister who was by her side since childhood has left in search of a better life. Baby was left to watch over and provide for her parents and two younger brothers. Working with Village Artisan for 8 years now, Baby never ceases to amaze us with the beautiful, intricate hand work on our paper and textile products she produces. Often times working late into the night by candle light, Baby is meticulous and faithful. She too will tell you how she has grown in leaps and bounds learning how to produce export quality handmade products in efficiency and excellence. There is nothing like seeing a young woman empowered as she learns to write out a bill and receive fair trade wages for a job that she is proud of. She then takes her earnings home for rent, food, medicine, and schooling – blessing her entire family. Courage. I think Webster’s could use an update in their example for the definition of Courage: Baby.
