Bhaji is a lively uneducated single mother of 5 girls. Shamed and left alone with no means of income, she and her oldest daughter now fully support themselves through hand making jewelry. Bhaji walks into a room and seems to command attention in the kindest way. Sitting on a floor surrounded by women during a wedding, funeral, chai party, work, or just visiting in her home, she draws everyone in as she speaks and tells stories. You can’t imagine our joy when we saw the work expand and Bhaji explained her passion to see other poor women empowered and treated with the same respect and Dignity that she has received from Village Artisan. In contrast to their darker days, the girls are all continuing education, excelling, and sensing a bright future.
